北宋官修的《地理新书》是宋代风水的集大成者。
书中主要是五姓葬法和五姓宅法，也有部分阴阳宅法的内容，同时也有很多形法的篇章，有极少部分的“丘延翰八卦法”是净阴净阳法的内容。书中没有任何关于玄空风水的内容，甚至没有任何地方提到三元九运的。
现在能看到的风水类书籍中，能够确定是唐代的主要是敦煌遗书中的宅经和葬书。

金身佳《敦煌写本宅经葬书校注》一书全面收录了敦煌遗书中的宅经和葬书，书中将“敦煌写本宅经”分为“五姓阴阳宅经类”“八宅经类”“一般宅经类”和“护宅神历卷”，书中将“敦煌写本葬书”分为“葬书、葬事类”和“山岗地脉类”。
从书中所收录的敦煌遗书来看，宅经类中多数是五姓宅经，其次是阴阳宅经，只有一篇是八宅经，葬书类中绝大部分都是五姓葬法的内容，只有《司马头陀地脉诀》中除了五姓葬法的内容之外，还有部分形势的内容。
在整本书中都没有看到任何玄空风水的内容，也没有任何地方提到三元九运。
通过对历史的考察，我们可以得到一个结论，唐宋时期流行的主要是五姓宅法和五姓葬法，其次是阴阳宅经和形势的内容，有极少部分八宅法和净阴净阳法。
这个结论也得到了考古学上实证的支持。据宿白《白沙宋墓》所载，白沙宋墓的朝向全部符合《地理新书》中五姓葬法的规则。

Introduction as follows:
The New Book of Geography, compiled by the Northern Song court, represents the culmination of Feng Shui knowledge during the Song dynasty.
The text primarily covers the Five Surnames burial methods and Five Surnames dwelling methods, with some content on Yin and Yang dwelling principles. It also includes numerous chapters on form school techniques, while a very small portion—the “Qiu Yanhuan Bagua Method”—addresses the purification of Yin and Yang energies. The book contains no references to Xuankong Feng Shui, nor does it mention the Three Cycles and Nine Periods theory at all.
Among extant feng shui texts, those definitively attributable to the Tang Dynasty are primarily the residential and burial manuals preserved in the Dunhuang manuscripts.
Jin Shenjia’s Annotated Edition of the Dunhuang Manuscripts: Residential and Burial Manuals comprehensively collects these texts. The work categorizes the Dunhuang Residential Manual into “Five Surnames Yin-Yang Residential Manuals,” ” Eight Mansions Manuals,“ ”General Residential Manuals,“ and ”Divine Calendar for Protecting Dwellings.“ The ”Dunhuang Manuscripts Burial Manual“ is categorized into ”Burial Manuals and Funeral Rites“ and ”Mountain Ridges and Earthly Veins.”
Based on the Dunhuang manuscripts collected in the book, the majority of the Feng Shui texts belong to the Five Surnames category, followed by Yin-Yang texts, with only one text belonging to the Eight Mansions category. The vast majority of burial texts focus on the Five Surnames burial methods, with only the “Sima Touduo’s Secrets of Earthly Veins” containing some content on landscape features in addition to the Five Surnames burial methods.
Throughout the entire book, there is no mention of Xuan Kong Feng Shui, nor is there any reference to the Three Cycles and Nine Periods.
Historical examination leads to the conclusion that during the Tang and Song dynasties, the predominant practices were the Five Surnames residential and burial methods, followed by Yin-Yang residential texts and form school content. Only a very small portion involved the Eight Mansions method and the methods of purifying Yin and Yang.
This conclusion is also supported by archaeological evidence. According to Su Bai’s “The Song Tombs at Baisha,” the orientation of all the tombs at Baisha conformed to the rules of the Five Surnames burial method as described in the “New Book of Geography.”
